When most people think of property for sale in any given area, they think of single-home dwellings or condos. Usually, apartments are for rent and not sold, but in New York City and other large cities throughout the United States, you can buy an apartment. The problem is, it can be very difficult to do because they are usually unlisted or only listed from brokers who have highly-qualified buyers. If you must have an apartment and want to buy it, you’ll have to do some digging or use a real estate agent.
Names
You can find listings in the newspaper and many other places, so pay close attention to the names mentioned. If you notice the same person popping up, they are likely a broker or real estate agent. You can look them up online or contact them to find out more. You may not be able to get that particular place, but they can help you find something.
Buildings
If all else fails, you can go directly to the building owner or manager. Ask them if there are availabilities or when they may have something available. A proactive attitude could get you the dream home you’ve wanted. Sometimes, the owner is looking to sell but hasn’t gotten around to putting an ad online or in the paper. You could skate past everyone else and buy it if you take this route.
You have the power to find something, but you’ll have to work hard to get it. Make sure you’ve put feelers out everywhere you can. You may also want to consider asking friends or coworkers. If you know someone is moving soon, find out where and see if the owner is willing to sell you the apartment or if it is only rentable.
While you don’t want to seem pushy, you do want somewhere to live that you can call your own.
